Washington becomes the latest US state to pass a right-to-repair law
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson signed the state's Right to Repair Act, requiring original manufacturers of digital electronic products to make parts, tools and documentation available to independent repairers and owners on fair and reasonable terms.
Effective 1 January 2026, the law also makes Washington the third US state, after Colorado and Oregon, to prohibit parts pairing and misleading alerts about unidentified components. It adds Washington to a group of states — including New York, California, Colorado, Oregon and Minnesota — that together represent about a quarter of the US population.
By guaranteeing access to repair resources and curbing software-based repair restrictions, the law extends product lifespans and supports the independent repair and reuse markets that are central to circular manufacturing.
